چکیده

Methods This study was done in the Accident & Emergency Centre of a tertiary hospital in India. This is a descriptive study assessing the validity of the MESS score in predicting limb salvage. The study included patients older than 18 years with open injuries/crush injuries of the lower extremities up to the level of the ankle (Gustilo and Anderson type III B / III C injuries). Patients were divided into those who presented within 6 hours and those after 6 hours of injury. The final study consisted of 50 patients with 51 lower limb injuries. The study was conducted over a span of 18 months.

Are We Justified Doing Salvage or Amputation Procedure Based on Mangled Extremity Severity Score in Mangled Upper Extremity Injury

INTRODUCTION Mangled upper limb injuries are at surge because of industrialization, modernization, and severe motor vehicle accidents. The utility of various scoring systems are meant for decision making in mangled lower limb injuries, and the same have been extrapolated for mangled upper limb injuries to make a decision of salvage or amputation for the lack of separate scoring system. MATERI...

The validity of the mangled extremity severity score in the assessment of upper limb injuries.

The Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS) may be used to decide whether to perform amputation in patients with injuries involving a limb. A score of 7 points or higher indicates the need for amputation. We have treated three patients with a MESS of 7 points or higher, in two of which the injured limb was salvaged. This scoring system was originally devised to assess injuries to the lower limb...

Evaluation of the mangled extremity severity score in combat-related type III open tibia fracture.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS) predicted outcomes for soldiers sustaining combat-related Gustilo-Anderson type III open tibia fractures. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SETTING Tertiary trauma center. PATIENTS Service Members with combat-related type III open tibia fractures occurring between 2003 an...

Evaluation of Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS) as a predictor of lower limb amputation in children with trauma.

BACKGROUND Management of the severely injured lower limb in children remains a challenge despite advances in surgical techniques. Models that predict the risk of lower limb trauma patients are designed to provide an estimation of the probability of limb salvage. In this study, we validate Mangled Extremity Syndrome Index (Mangled Extremity Severity Score [MESS]) by measurement of its discrimina...

Delayed amputation in lower limb trauma: an analysis of factors leading to delayed amputation.

An in-depth analysis of the course of events leading to 49 delayed amputation of the lower extremity in 47 patients with open lower limb fractures is presented. Seventeen amputations were performed within one month mainly for vascular reasons. Eleven were between one month and one year, due to persistent sepsis and 21 amputations were performed more than a year after the original injury for inf...
